Raf Simons’ New Campaign Is an Ode To Robert Mapplethorpe

START

Raf Simons’ latest campaign is a clear nod to one of the New York art scene’s most prized possessions: The famous photographer and Clyde to Patti Smith’s Bonnie, Robert Mapplethorpe. Perhaps its to honor his new locale; Last August, the beloved Belgian designer moved his entire production stateside in lieu of his new role at Calvin Klein and is slated to debut the first show for his eponymous brand in the city tomorrow for Fall 2017.

The Spring 2017 ads continue to explore the theme of that same collection, which was centered around Mapplethorpe’s seminal work. Styled by Olivier Rizzo and captured by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign taps male models to appear in BDSM-inspired poses with leather belts around their necks. The end result is startlingly beautiful and a clever homage to the artistic, once-controversial homoerotic series, which made major waves in New York in the late 1960s. It’s a refreshing reminder that in today’s more liberated fashion sphere, we do owe it to pioneers like Mapplethorpe who paved the way for open-mindedness to different types of sexuality.
