Billy Idol’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Style Lives On

With ’80s hits like “Rebel Yell” and the two-part “White Wedding,” Billy Idol became a rock ‘n’ legend. The anthems have transcended the 1980s, immortalizing Idol’s punk rock sound and style. His signature look consisting of bleach blonde hair, a studded leather jacket and pants, and layered chain necklaces became the epitome of badass style. Along with his music, Idol created a legacy of fashion defined by his devil-may-care attitude. On stage, if he wasn’t wearing ripped t-shirts, studded leather jackets, skin-tight pants, and fingerless gloves, he’d be in various levels of undress.

As Idol entered the upper echelons of the rock scene, he began brushing shoulders with other iconic names including Bon Jovi, David Bowie, and Stevie Nicks. The above picture of Idol and the latter was captured in 1989 at a listening party for Nicks’ album Other Side of the Mirror. The image became the inspiration for a shoot in CR Fashion Book Issue 13 featuring Paris Jackson and her rumored once-girlfriend Cara Delevingne, accompanying an interview between Nicks and Jackson.

Captured by frequent CR collaborator Mario Sorrenti, the pair embodies a “White Wedding” of sorts. Delevingne takes on the role of Idol, with spiky peroxide hair, a motorcycle jacket, and silver chain. In her arms, Jackson transforms into the queen of rock-and roll in a sheer white dress with lace detailing. The shoot shows the enduring allure of the rockstar’s style legacy, marked by Idol’s signature look.

Idol, who turns 63 today, still has his signature hairdo. While he may no longer squeeze into leather pants on the daily, he stayed true to his aesthetic, recently wearing an all-black ensemble to his naturalization ceremony as he became a US citizen on November 14.
