Hang Out in Phillip Lim’s New L.A. Loft

START

Following many months of discourse about how to draw customers into brick and mortar stores, Phillip Lim has unveiled a unique new retail concept in Los Angeles. The designer’s eponymous brand has taken over a 5,000 square foot warehouse in the city’s historic Arts District. The new store’s underlying idea is to look like a replica version of Lim’s home, except that everything—right down to the books and stationary—is for sale. The location is somewhat of a homecoming for Lim as his very first design studio was in the same area.

Inside, the store follows an open floor plan and mixes contemporary, rustic, and East Asian design elements. It’s divided into shoppable modules by a varying rotation of adobe walls, strips of industrial plastic, and Japanese screens. More lifestyle emporium than traditional shop, there’s lighting, objet d’art, furniture, and much more available for purchase, as well as Lim’s current men’s and women’s collections. The décor is eclectic, but it’s not contrived: There are shoes perched on rough concrete blocks, fine art hung on bare whitewashed walls, and rare mid-century furniture balances out some newer pieces designed especially for the store.

The new locale is one of Lim’s largest stores and only its third in America. Its opening marks the first of what we expect to be many designers opening more lifestyle-slash-experience-oriented stores in order to spark renewed interest in physical shopping and revitalize the relevance of retail.
