Diane von Furstenberg Muses Throughout History

START

Diane von Furstenberg, who turns 73 today, first launched her eponymous label in 1970, and in 1974, became a household name from her history-making idea: the wrap dress. The flattering style became wildly popular and profitable in the ’70s, but she quickly expanded her business, sold the dress’ license, and lost direction of the brand. She made a comeback in the late ’90s, reacquiring the rights to her wrap dress and introducing a whole new generation of women to the silhouette and the brand’s lively prints. In addition to its signature style, the Diane von Furstenberg label has also become known for empowering women through its inclusive marketing and runways, and von Furstenberg’s own vocal feminism. In addition to her fashion house’s renown, von Furstenberg has become a fixture in the fashion industry herself, appointed as the president of The Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2006 and chairwoman of the organization in 2015, only succeeded by Tom Ford earlier this year. She has maintained close ties to her brand over the years, and even though she hired Michael Herz and Yvan Mispelaere as lead designer in the early 2010s was still given much of the credit for its success during their respective periods at DVF. In 2016, Jonathan Saunders was brought on as chief creative officer, taking the brand in a commercial direction aimed towards a younger demographic. After 18 months, Saunders exited the label and was replaced by Nathan Jenden in 2018. In the early 2000s, Jenden had worked closely with von Furstenberg for a decade, so he was a confident choice to take the helm of DVF.
