Almost 50 years ago, Elvis Presley made history in Hawaii. The King of Rock ’n’ Roll, who would have been 84 last week, took the stage in Honolulu clad in an all-white jumpsuit designed by Bill Belew to belt out classics like “Steamroller Blues” and “Hound Dog” while millions watched. The special, titled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, marked the first time a concert with a single performer was broadcast live on TV via satellite—and on a more somber note, one of the last times Presley performed before his addiction ultimately took over.
Presley wasn’t the only icon to perform in the Paradise of the Pacific. The state has drawn every artist from the Rolling Stones and Mariah Carey to Earth, Wind & Fire and Diana Ross over the years.
