What to Wear When Exploring the Fashion Scene in Tbilisi, Georgia

START

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi Spring/Summer 2019 just wrapped last month. Now in its ninth year, the semiannual spectacle is quickly drawing top retailers and editors eager to witness the fledging talents coming out of the buzzy Caucasus country. One could argue that it was Georgian-born Demna Gvasalia—fashion’s lovechild and the force behind Vetements and, as of 2015, Balenciaga—who first put Tbilisi on fashion’s collective radar with the launch of his Margiela-inspired, tongue-in-cheek label in 2014. It’s worth noting that Gvasalia’s recent Spring/Summer 2019 collection for Vetements was inspired by the former Soviet republic, and the show, staged in Paris this summer, even included 40 street-cast Georgian models.

Georgia’s capital—Tbilisi—might not immediately come to mind when considering major shopping destinations around the globe. But it’s actually host to a flurry of luxury boutiques, cool concept stores (like Chaos, where you can find the latest wares from J.W. Anderson, Maryam Nassir Zedeh, Shrimps, and more), and a ton of open-air flea markets packed with vintage, Soviet-era goodness (check out Dry Bridge or Deda Ena Park). Below, find CR’s best picks to toss in your luggage should Tbilisi be your next big travel destination.
