Whether you think apple picking is an overrated Instagram activity or the perfect way to spend a fall afternoon, there’s no denying that it’s a timeless activity. The forbidden fruit first arrived in America in the 17th century, thanks to the settlers at Jamestown who relocated from Europe. However, it wasn’t until the 1800s when it became mainstream for city dwellers to visit an apple orchard and actually enjoy their time spent picking apples.
A century later, the activity even picked up in Old Hollywood. Here, actress Elena Verdugo selects the perfect apple from her front yard in 1956, with a little help from her son Richard. Verdugo is best known for her role as Conseulo Lopez, a Latina nurse in the 1969 hit TV show, Marcus Welby, M.D. However, she once described the hardworking and skilled Lopez as being “as American as apple pie,” which obviously makes Verdugo the perfect icon for a day of apple picking.
So take a note from Verdugo and embrace one of America’s favorite pastimes, with a cozy chic outfit made for hitting the orchards.
