What to Wear When Visiting the Versace Mansion in Miami

START

Jet-setting across the seven seas, or simply swapping neighborhood spots, What To Wear When is your weekly column for shopping inspiration.

Miami is known for many things—the beaches, the party scene, the Art Deco architecture—but only one landmark building has been able to so accurately embody the glamour, the all-out opulence, and the intrigue that shrouds the seaside city: the Versace Mansion. Now known as the boutique hotel called Villa Casa Casuarina, the palatial estate was thrusted back into the spotlight after it was announced that FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace would film at the scene of the crime.

“I don’t think I could have made the show if I couldn’t have gotten that house,” creator Ryan Murphy had said.”There was no way you could build [a set] of it. Two of the rooms were made out of seashells.”

Built in 1930, the mansion changed hands for decades until one day in 1992, Gianni Versace stumbled upon the abandoned property, and he was so taken with it, legend has it that he made the decision to buy the space—an offer of .95 million—during the tour. He turned what used to be a 24-room apartment complex into an enormous mansion with eight bedrooms, two kitchens, three sitting rooms, 10 bathrooms, a bar, a library, and four living rooms—all lavishly decorated in Versace fabrics, famous artworks, and antiques—complete with a terrace, a garden, a guesthouse, and an extravagant 24-karat gold tiled swimming pool.

There aren’t any tours of the mansion, but there’s the option to book a stay at Villa Casa Casuarina or dine at Gianni, the on-site restaurant that’s named after the late legendary designer. And, in our opinion, the only way to get the full ’90s Versace experience is to look the part with glam gold hardware, slinky safety pin-embellished dresses, and dramatic sandals that you can shop, below.
