Under the auspices of Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga is more readily associated with the avant-garde underground of Manhattan’s downtown scene. Today, the French house has opened the doors to its first Demna-designed retail space amongst the ritzier Upper East Side shopping destinations of Madison Avenue.
The new store echoes the bare bones industrial aesthetic of Demna’s first Balenciaga flagship in Paris on Rue Saint Honoré, which was made to look like a clothing warehouse. The location features clothing hung on industrial conveyor belts, cast concrete walls, metallic ceilings, stainless steel displays, and faux leather benches.
The New York iteration looks very similar, also mimicking a production headquarters. To the delight of Instagramers, the store’s 1,800 square feet of floor space is covered in the ‘Balenicaga’ logo carpet that first showed up as the runway for Gvasalia’s Fall 2017 collection. Another attraction is the three sculptures by American artist, Mark Jenkins.
Whether you’re uptown or downtown, more Balenciaga stock in New York is good news for everyone.
The new Balenciaga boutique opens today, June 6th, at 840 Madison Avenue.
