An important fashion competition has been taking place over the last week in the South of France. The annual Hyères Festival is a contest open to young designers, who enter the competition for the chance to win a life-changing grant to help jumpstart their career. There are ten contestants in each category: fashion, accessory design, and photography. The fashion and accessories designers build small showrooms to display their work for a panel of jurors and the public; the photographers participate in a group show. Previous big-name winners include, Anthony Vaccarello, Victor & Rolf, and Christian Wijnants.

This year, 29-year-old Swiss fashion designer Vanessa Schindler walked away with the festival’s Première Vision Grand Prize. Schindler has just completed a masters degree at Geneva University of Art and Design. She impressed judges, which included Schiaparelli style director Bertrand Guyon and and the Webster founder Laure Durbreuil, with her innovative use of textiles. The collection she presented was titled “Urethane Pool–Chapter 2,” so named after her use of the chemical resin, urethane, in her work. In place of sewing, she used the chemical to join the seams throughout of her award-winning skirts, dresses, and shirts. Her collection put particular emphasis on manipulating the kind of heavy duty fabrics usually used in interior decoration, to fit more traditionally feminine silhouettes.

The festival’s grand prize includes a 15,000-euro grant, access to Chanel’s ateliers to help produce a new collection, and the opportunity to design a capsule collection with Petit Bateau. Another Swiss designer won the top accessories prize. Marina Chedel presented a range of sculptural wooden shoes, titled “Over the Peak.” Irish lensman, Daragh Soden took home the the prize for photography.
