Each year, Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show honors the craft of the house’s talented artisans. For the 2022 show presented at le19M, the house paid tribute to the eight houses from shoemakers to jewelry experts who work to create exceptionally crafted pieces for the house each season. Creative Director Virginie Viard adds her own personal touch to each design in the show, highlighting the eight houses, and embracing the architecture of le19M, a new Parisian building designed by architect Rudy Ricciott, dedicated to the Metiers d’Art.
“The invitation box includes a collection of texts by the rappers Claude MC Solaar and Abd Al Malik, and writers such as Sarah Chiche, Anne Berest, and Nina Bouraoui, recounting their vision of the Maisons d’art residing at le19M. There’s also a series of postcards taken from the animated films created by REMEMBERS. I wanted each model, drawn by a different illustrator, to represent one of the Maisons d’art and evolve in a little story inspired by a Chanel icon. I wanted to illustrate each House as best as possible, but with a twist,” explained Viard. Animated films by REMEMBERS were utilized to draw each model to represent a Maisons d’Art as a Chanel icon. The models included Fran Summers, Pan Haowen, Mariam de Vinzelle, and more.
In terms of the collection, the looks featured lots of knits, rich embroidery, and a deep jewel tone palette that’s easy on the eye. Each look was paired with Mary Jane heels varying color from outfit to outfit. Additionally, Chanel’s creative director of makeup Lucia Pica painted models with a thick black winged liner rock ‘n roll style. In true Chanel fashion, Viard looks to reinvent the house codes with heavy attention to bouclé and tweed fabrics in suits and dresses layered in various lengths and styles for an updated twist on the iconic style.
Viard and her team of eight artisans heighten every look down to every little detail, with a tassel here, ruffles there, and embroidery there. The collection’s attention to design creates dynamic and full looks, with waist chains and chunky jewelry stacked in a chic and effortless way. The various pairings of plunging necklines, oversized Chanel monogram, and flowy bottoms are ideal to celebrate the contributions of the eight houses and portray their own influence at Chanel.
