“Karl Lagerfeld used to photograph the Chanel campaigns himself,” said Creative Director Virginie Viard in the show’s notes. “Today, I call upon photographers. I love the way that they see Chanel. It supports and inspires me.” An ode to fashion shows in the ’80s, Viard pays homage to Chanel’s roots, by acknowledging the importance of fashion photographers, with teasers by Inez & Vinoodh, photographing faces of the brand, such as Lily Rose-Depp and JENNIE, all holding the same pose. Viard brought back the ‘80s runway format with lots of photographers and a raised runway channeling not only an ’80s aesthetic in the clothes but also the atmosphere.

The show began with classic one-piece swimsuits with white trim, reminiscent of Karl Lagerfeld’s collections in the 1980s. The looks transitioned into wearable, summery outfits with long maxi skirts, baby tank tops, and gold waist chains that dangled from the model’s hips. Bikini tops and patent leather co-ords make an appearance later in the show, with iconic Chanel silhouettes of A-line skirts and button-up tops.

Viard especially tapped into the Lagerfeld-era of Chanel in the slew of vibrantly-colored Chanel suits. The cotton candy pink, pale yellow, and lilac tones homaged his infusion of youth into the garment which first modernized the look back in the 80s and 90s. These suits take on a daring and risque shape, with tight, high-waisted shorts and feminine touches on the tops, with flaring at the waist and sleeves.

Inspired by both Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, creative director Virginie Viard emulated her predecessors in this collection but takes on her own creative spirit, with sensual and feminine silhouettes as well as a whimsical butterfly print to close the show. In terms of accessories, Viard offered up several must-have arm candy pieces in all shapes and sizes including heart-shaped mini bags, beaded crossbodies, over-the-shoulder hobo bags, and a reedition of the limited edition Chanel N°5 cocktail bag.

Viard claims that the simplicity and nostalgia of the collection, and the teaser, are sexier and edgier versions of classic Chanel.
