Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2022 runway was nothing less than an unexpected, meta-event, in true Demna Gvasalia fashion. Guests sat inside the Théâtre du Châtelet to view a screening of live “red carpet” arrivals, which was actually the star-studded runway that took the form of a movie premiere. Balenciaga models mixed with celebrities like Offset, Cardi B, Elliot Page, Isabelle Huppert, and Lewis Hamilton, in a clever and glamorous presentation that reflected the collection. Little did the audience know that they really were at a film premiere, surprised with a crossover episode of The Simpsons and Balenciaga, where Marge and citizens of Springfield are flown to Paris to model the lastest collection. Gvasalia’s childlike multiverse of fashion spectacles relieves the seriousness from runway shows, flipping the idea of high art on its head, and embracing the medium to new peaks. “It’s more like a music or movie business, in the way you can convey things,” he said backstage. “I like exploring these borders.”
The designer approached the show’s producers in hope to collaborate, for his appreciation of “its whole tongue-in-cheek nature and the slightly romantic-naive side,” said Gvasalia. His love for social commentary and American culture, with camp and sartorial sarcasm, makes for a genius team-up, and gifted a hilarious and heartwarming story in celebration of fashion. There’s no denying that Smithers stole the show in red.
The real runway opened with a grand black lace ballgown and unfolded into sequin column dresses, oversized suit jackets, sleek pleated gowns and pointed bags, wide-leg denim ripped at the knee, a navy lingerie ensemble of pantaleggings, bustier, and matching opera gloves, and of course a skin-tight black bodysuit for the finale, followed by Gvasalia in a black veil and hoodie. The collection exists in Balenciaga black, with touches of chrome, punchy neons, and polkadots. The French house’s collaboration with Crocs continues as well, this time in a “punk” iteration, sitting on a thick platform drilled with silver nails and bolts. Gvasalia seems hellbent on making Crocs cool, and he’s succeeding.
