Riccardo Tisci’s Burberry presented its Spring/Summer 2022 womenswear collection titled “Animal Instinct” at London Fashion Week, spotlighting heritage staples and fresh abstract prints. The presentation unveiled digitally and is a certified carbon neutral event through Burberry’s Regeneration Fund, in the house’s effort to be Climate Positive by 2040.
Dedicated to his mother, Tisci notes, “To me, this presentation really represents the freedom of our imaginations: how we dream to come alive. I wanted to move through a series of immersive spaces, each of them unique and unexpected in their sound, texture and experience. It’s that idea of flicking between the endless realities and fantasies we have at our fingertips each day. This is for my mother, Elmerinda, and to a journey full of new possibilities.”
The show opens with reconstructed, voluminous trench coat silhouettes with sleeveless and backless cuts that reveal printed swimsuits underneath, finished with exaggerated lapels, chain-link embellishments, and raw hems. Burberry introduces a fluid spirit in their classic outerwear, with oversized sleeves and cape-like shoulder flaps lined with leather. The blobby, geometric print, reminiscent of trendy cowhide, runs throughout the range layered in vivid colors or mirrored in black and white. The pattern is seen on the outwear or printed on sheer mesh atop the ‘Universal Passport’ graphic, which is also reconstructed and stretched.
Freedom of movement, a key theme for the Spring/Summer collection, is embodied in animal-inspired fringe, off-the-shoulder necklines, sleeveless tops, and body-conscious cutouts. Sexy bodysuits made with stretch technical fabrications ground Tisci’s unstructured shapes with a breathe of confident energy, appearing in black gauzy mesh in look 28, or a dazzling mix of crystal net and tulle in look 34.
Burberry introduces their newest bag, the Rhombi, in a ellipse-shape inspired by the tortoiseshell-camouflage colorblocking seen on the clothing. Sitting on the shoulder, the smooth leather sculpts to the body and fronts a chic oversized clasp, with doublestitching for the style in cotton gabardine inspired by Burberry trenches. The Rhombi arrives in soft fawn and black colorways, with clutch iterations that feature ring-pierced details and metallic fringe. The British house also updates the standout Olympia bag in a softer shape in leather and a circular strap.
