For his runway debut, Maximilian Davis did not disappoint. Just yesterday, the 25-year-old London-based designer presented his first live collection for his eponymous brand at London Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2022 Fashion East show to an awe-struck audience. With his latest showcase, Davis not only continued to prove that the Fashion East, the non-profit talent incubator that supports emerging designers, creates some of the most creative new brands, but also that he is the British style-star to watch.
Davis was born in Manchester and comes from a sizable Afro-Caribbean family. His paternal grandparents immigrated to the United Kingdom from Jamaica and his maternal, from Trinidad. Thus, Davis channeled this deep cultural and familial connection to the Caribbean into his latest collection and presented 22 looks inspired by the island of Trinidad. The result is a perfect blend of classic British tailoring and cool, sexy beachwear.
The garments themselves ranged from crisp, perfectly-fitting coats, to slinky sheer dresses, to incredibly hot sculptural swimsuits in white, blue, black, and his signature vivid red. For example, Davis sent an all-white matching set down the runway, featuring a pair of short-shorts and a high neck, long sleeve coat, which was reminiscent of a classic naval uniform. Then, just a couple of looks later, a far sexier garment emerged in the form of a black minidress with a deep scoop, filled in with fringe, which Rihanna recently donned for Dazed Magazine’s 30th Anniversary issue.
Perhaps the most show-stopping look of the collection was the last. Specifically, Davis sent the final model down the runway in an awe-inspiring, urchin-like piece, that was worn like a backpack and appeared to sprout out of the model’s back like wings. Paired with a simple ruched black bandeau and matching skirt, the piece appeared to be a sleeker interpretation of Carnival feather costumes and was nothing short of wearable art. With this debut collection, Davis showcased the broad spectrum of his talent. He flawlessly demonstrated that he is capable of turning looks that are sleek, sexy, modest, grand, and minimal, all at the same time. Needless to say, this versatility as well as his creativity have set him up to be not only a star in the London fashion scene, but also on the global style stage.
