For his Spring/Summer 2022 show, LaQuan Smith took his brand to new heights…literally. More specifically, the Queens native unveiled his latest collection at one of New York’s most iconic sites: The Empire State Building. As far as runway settings for New York Fashion Week go, it’s pretty hard to top that. Being 102 floors high on one of the world’s most famed skyscrapers not only provides the perfect backdrop for photos, but it also speaks volumes about the direction that the young designer is taking his blossoming brand: up.
The 55 look collection was, as one would expect from Smith, incredibly sexy, but undeniably original. On a few occasions, he revisited crowd favorites, such as the boiled wool halter dress, which graced the runway a few times in blue and white, as well as white lace. The reflective motorcycle trousers, worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Irina Shayk also reemerged in blue and white.
However, Smith’s frequent use of draping and ruching in this collection saw him exposing his muses’ frames in different, more thoughtful ways. For instance, a red capri jumpsuit exposed the model from clavicle to navel, but featured cleverly placed twists and ruching to give the garment texture and a novel silhouette. Similarly, a navy crop top and matching panty wrapped around the model’s body in such a way that it showcased a bit of breastbone, a bit of shoulder, but still covered the neck.
Also, a novel feature on Smith’s runway was his new partner, Puma. The brand’s athleticwear appeared in the form of logo-ed sweatshirts and t-shirts that were styled with fishnet stockings. All of the pieces from the collection could be purchased through see-now-buy-now retail with Afterpay, a new form of shopping that several NYFW designers have been engaging with as of late. Thus, with his latest show, Smith has not only made it clear that he intends to bring his brand into the future from a consumer standpoint, but also that he has remained as original and sexy as ever.END
