Every Look from Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2022

This year, for his Spring/Summer 2022 collection, Christian Siriano looked to the past. Specifically, he looked to his own family’s history. and sought inspiration in old photographs of his Italian grandmother from the 60’s and 70’s decked-out in vibrant garments on vacation in Positano. These colorful images most definitely shone through in his garments, as did the show’s setting: Gotham Hall. This event space in Midtown Manhattan was built in 1924, at the height of the Jazz Age when wealth and excess reigned supreme in New York. With a high, gilded ceiling and mammoth embossed iron doors, it’s hard to imagine that it could’ve been constructed in any other time. When combined, Siriano’s familial inspiration, as well as his choice of venue reveal a collection that conveys a sense of unbridled joy and splendor.

The show opened with the Welsh singer Marina mounting a blue platform and belting out a pop-punk ballad. What followed was equally bold, as the 59-look collection showcased a range of garments from tailored suits, to voluminous ballgowns in a variety of retina-shocking shades. A sizeable, glittery emerald green bubble skirt and matching bra aptly encapsulated this sense of grandeur, as did the wide-leg, dynamically-pattered vinyl matching sets. The tailored suits and slinky dresses provided brief moments of contrast to this sense of excess. A clean-cut, asymmetric white suit stands out as a model for such minimalism. In addition to feeling very current, these pieces demonstrated that Siriano is capable of restraint and crafting garments for a wide range of styles.

Although the show was bright and bold, it lacked a clear vision. There was far too much variety in materials and design, making it difficult to find a single, unifying factor. Despite this, with this collection Siriano continues to prove his versatility in constructing garments for not only varying tastes, but a diverse range of body types as well. Precious Lee opened and closed the show, and, in between, it featured a myriad of models of different sizes and races. Thus, with his latest showcase, Siriano seemed to perfectly encapsulate the sense of excitement and joy that we all are feeling as we come to the end of the COVID-19 era, as well as the uncontrollable excitement of the world opening back up.
