The Importance of Victoria Beckham’s Little Black ‘Gucci’ Dress

Before Victoria Beckham, who turns 45 today, became the fashion mogul she is now, the young Spice Girls member had high aspirations for her career and wardrobe. During the height of her Posh Spice days, Beckham was often spotted in body-conscious black mini dresses that accentuated her petite figure, like the one she wore in the band’s 1998 movie Spice World. That dress in particular was cause for conversation after Beckham revealed years later that it was not Gucci, as the girls say in the movie, but was actually from Miss Selfridge. The fact that the “Wannabe” singer speaks so openly about not being able to afford designer dresses at the start of her career, when image was everything to the rising pop group, shows how Beckham is proud of her growth. Over the years, the multi-talented singer, designer and mother has undergone a persistent style evolution, not without its speed bumps, that continues today.

The “Gucci” dress was not only the first dress that Beckham wore in the Spice Girls, it also marks one of the first times that designer fashion entered into Beckham’s repertoire (even if she mislead the audience.) It reflects the relatable aspiration of a young woman to have a closet full of high fashion, rather than high street, labels. Beckham has surely accumulated such a wardrobe now, but before then, she slipped on her fake Gucci and was even spotted carrying a counterfeit Louis Vuitton. Fortunately, both situations turned out for the best. In 2002, a picture of Beckham carrying a fake Louis Vuitton graffiti handbag made the cover of a British tabloid. Marc Jacobs, who was the creative director of Louis Vuitton at the time, saw the picture and sent her genuine one as soon as it was produced. That event was the catalyst for their friendship, which has endured since then, with Beckham appearing in an iconic 2008 campaign for Marc Jacobs’ namesake brand that she riffed on ten years later for her own fashion label.

Beckham’s fashion friendships have been influential to the designer. Since her Spice Girls days, Beckham has crossed paths with Donatella Versace, to whom she owes her first fashion show experience. As the Spice Girls made it big, Beckham captured the attention of Donatella who invited her to the Versace runway show during Milan Fashion Week in October 2007. According to Beckham, she still has the black leather off-the-shoulder dress that she wore to the show and it was one of the most memorable events for her.

As her own namesake luxury label has found success since its inception in September 2008, Beckham has clearly become an authority in the industry. Gone are the days of body-con mini dresses, matching leather couples outfits, and asymmetrical hair. Instead, she promotes a sleek and sophisticated style with collections full of feminine, modern dresses, and a personal proclivity for wide-legged, effortless trousers. She owns her history of questionable fashion choices and continues to move forward with a classic, elegant aesthetic, showing how far she’s come from that first “Gucci” dress.
