When Net-a-Porter’s began its mentorship program, The Vanguard, last season, its goal was to offer a global stage to talented but young designers new to the marketplace. Through support from the chic e-tailer, the debut Fall/Winter 2018 brands saw “significant” growth since says Global Buying Director Elizabeth von der Goltz, who notes that Souliers Martinez specifically accounted for nearly 80 percent of its yearly sales through a woven pump on NetaPorter.com. “In an industry that is constantly focusing on the new, we not only want to introduce freshness to our customers but we also feel a responsibility to help the fashion industry continue to ensure success for new and emerging designers, as they are ultimately the future of our business,” she tells CR. Now back for a second coming, The Vanguard has selected four new young designers (Peter Do, Commission, Anne Manns, and Ratio Et Motus) to receive comprehensive Net-a-Porter mentorships and join the site exclusively for Spring/Summer 2019. Below, von der Goltz gives explains her favorite aspects of each, and why you should be adding all to your cart this season.
Peter Do, Ready-to-Wear
“Peter Do has an impressive background, as an FIT graduate and stints under Phoebe Philo at Celine, he has such an impressive, sophisticated view on design and uses beautiful craftsmanship and tailoring.”
Commission, Ready-to-Wear
“The trio behind Commission take influence from diverse sources such as the globalization of Asia, New York’s youth culture, and corporate dressing. Commission has positioned itself as the intelligent choice for subtle cool, and I love their urban aesthetic that covers everything from street to workwear.”
Anne Manns, Jewelry
“Berlin-based Anne Manns’ jewelry is inspired by sculpture and nature. I adore her minimal aesthetic articulated in her pea and aubergine inspired collections. All of her pieces have a way of being organic yet abstract.”
Ratio Et Motus, Leather Goods
“Ratio et Motus create fine leather goods in classic styles with a modern twists. The brand aims to produce products with longevity in mind, utilizing Italian craftsmanship, and considered design details. The clever, playful designs—such as the way the outside pouch on their signature bag can be snapped off to be used on its own—makes these classic styles so on-trend for today.”
