Hedi Slimane Unveils His First Womenswear Campaign For Celine


Hedi Slimane has donned many hats over the past decade. From claiming fame as creative director for Dior Homme in the early aughts (which introduced his glam rock aesthetic to the world), and rebranding Yves Saint Laurent (infamously dropping the „Yves“) in 2012; to, most recently, replacing Phoebo Philo at Celine (yes, Celine without an é)–his debut for the French house for Spring/Summer 2019 was met with plenty of skepticism from loyal fans of the brand.

When it came time for the designer to unveil his first womenswear campaign for the house this past week, it lingered on rock minimalism, androgyny, and slim youthfulness. Starring 17-year old British model Hannah Motler, the campaign is entitled Paris la nuit: Journal Nocturne de la jeunesse Parisienne („Paris at night: a diary of the Parisian youth“) and flirts with the designer’s natural affinity for disheveled glitzy rock ’n‘ roll glamour: Combining black and white close ups of a tousled-haired Motler, with super-saturated detail shots accentuating the sequin, satin, and leather details of the collection’s clothing and accessories.

The new campaign is lensed by Slimane himself, and is not the first time the designer has photographed his own campaigns. In addition to keeping a photo diary online, he has previously photographed ones for for Saint Laurent and, most recently, Celine’s first menswear campaign–which he premiered a couple of weeks ago.
