Gabriela Hearst approaches design with the concept of “honest luxury” in mind. She carries this through her fashion and accessories collections, which are made thoughtfully and made to last. Most recently, this is reflected by an exclusive, limited-time release of her Patsy bag on Net-A-Porter.
Made with luxurious leather and gold hardware and crafted in Italy, the design of the handbag takes inspiration from women who paved the way in the workforce during the 1940s. With World War II underway, more women began going to work and packing their lunch. They carried top handle lunch boxes, which Hearst sought to embody through the minimal design of her Patsy bag. Through referencing these inspiring women, Hearst calls upon their strength and willpower in the face of unsafe working conditions, and the Patsy bag symbolizes their resilience.
With roots in feminist history, it makes sense that the Patsy has been seen in the hands of women’s rights advocates and celebrity icons of today including Tina Fey, Anne Hathaway, and Rupi Kaur, among others. These ladies show that it not only makes a chic outfit companion, but the retro-inspired style also continues to carry the legacy of women who have come before them.
