The Birkenstock Cannot Be Stopped

Classic, cozy, and (sometimes) crazy, the Birkenstock is fashion’s most unexpected accomplice. And now the underdog shoe continues its long-lasting admiration in a new mobile retail space at Milan’s 10 Corso Como.
The Box—which opened earlier this month just steps from the iconic shopping complex 10 Corso Como—had its interior designed by artist Kris Ruhs, who created an open-concept space within a chrome storage container. The pop-up shop carries six limited-edition Arizona-style shoes that were co-designed by Como founder Carla Sozzani with some of the artist’s patterns.
Birkenstock has been making a name for itself all over the fashion world this summer, not just with the Box (which premiered in Berlin, and has already passed through Barneys in New York), but also through a collaboration with the ultra-chic French boutique Colette on a polka-dot version of the shoe. The brand also announced last month that it will sponsor the Whitney’s annual Art gala, which, in addition to being a hot social ticket, benefits a variety of the museum’s programs. Until then, we’ll be trying desperately to get our hands on the 10 Corso Como collaboration, as Birkenstock is only making 500 of each edition.
