One of the biggest thrills for any designer is to see, firsthand, how real women react to their clothes. For New York-based fashion house Sies Marjan, that experience sparked an idea that led to an ongoing series called ‘The Girlfriends Project,’ in which creative director Sander Lak captures his closest friends’ enthusiasm for his collection.

The first visuals from this series debuted for Fall 2016, and today Sies has released the second chapter for Spring 2017, photographed by fashion-turned-fine art photographer Nigel Shafran. Lak has always been a fan of Shafran, so he gave him full creative freedom, also citing art direction by Christopher Simmonds.

“The Girlfriends Project gives us another vehicle besides the fashion show to collaborate with talents whom I admire and to show the collections through a different lens,” Laks says. “For me, the key to everything is collaboration. It’s when we share and interact with each other that great things come about.”

Without further ado, you now have permission to spend some time with Sander Lak’s actual group of “girlfriends,” which isn’t limited to just girls. Each photograph is stamped with the current year and the year that he met each friend.
