Toronto-native Ryan Keating had always pictured himself continuing his family tradition in construction work, but after graduating from college in 2014 he was scouted by a model agent and landed somewhere very different—the runway for Costume National’s Fall 2015 show. Now he’s signed with Soul Artist Management and the 23-year old is fast becoming one of the most in demand male models of 2016. He walked in nine shows during last month’s menswear collections and scored a place in Peter Dundas’ first menswear lineup for Roberto Cavalli. Here, Ryan shares his career highlights and his secret to those washboard abs:

How were you discovered?
“I was scouted while I was at high school, but I didn’t have any interest in pursuing it as a career until I graduated from college in Canada and got scouted again. I always thought I’d work in construction like my family, but modeling seemed like a great opportunity to have fun and travel. I love it because every day is so different.”

Did you have any interest in fashion before then?
“Not particularly. Being a model sort of just happened to me, but I’m learning more about fashion. There’s always something I like in everyone’s designs.”

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
“Last year I walked for Gucci and Fendi on the same day which was amazing and definitely a career high for me.”

How do you stay in shape for your job?
“I’ve been doing P90X for about three years. It’s a home exercise program that my agent told me about. I put off doing it for ages, but it really works and you can do it from anywhere.”

What’s your approach to healthy eating?
“I have Celiac disease, I’m lactose intolerant, and I don’t like eggs, so just by cutting out those things makes it’s pretty easy to eat healthy. Living in New York also helps. There are so many good restaurants here that can cater to your diet. In particular, I like Hu Kitchen, Whole Foods, and Angelica’s Kitchen. There’s also an amazing place called Smack which does vegan and gluten-free macaroni and cheese. It’s unreal!”

What’s your most embarrassing moment?
“Shows are always fun because you’re often with the same group of guys and we’ve all really gotten to know each other, but I don’t think anything too crazy has happened yet. There have been a couple of embarrassing moments, but I don’t think I can share them!”

What do you like to do in your free time?
“I love to hang out with my friends when I’m not working. I also really like reading. I’m currently reading Naked by David Sedaris, which is pretty good. And I like every type of music and genre of film. The Notebook is a great movie. ”

Which actor would play you in a movie?
“Johnny Depp because I think all of his characters are so cool.”
What would people be most surprised to know about you?
“Probably that I can ride a unicycle. I learned how when I was staying with my grandparents one summer in Calgary when I was younger. They had one in their garage so I just taught myself how to ride it. After that I got two unicycles. I used to ride them to high school every day.”

What projects do you have on the horizon?
“I have quite a few, but I can’t share the details yet so you’ll just have to wait and see!”
