Vintage Roller Skating Photos

START

Since roller skates gained widespread popularity at the end of the 19th century, they’ve remained a novelty for the whole family to enjoy. The earliest iterations of roller skates first appeared in the mid-1700s, but were not very maneuverable. It wasn’t until James Leonard Plimpton officially introduced and patented the quad skate on January 4, 1863 that the activity became a favorite form of recreation. Plimpton’s skates featured two sets of wheels that could pivot with the person’s weight, allowing for greater ease of movement and steering ability. Roller dances, derbies, and races then became a common pastime. In honor of the quad skates’ anniversary tomorrow, click through the gallery to see people, including celebs like Marilyn Monroe and Cher, roller skating in style.
