After 93 years across 2,448 miles, stretching from Santa Monica to Chicago, Route 66 has hosted its fair share of travelers. Established November 11, 1926, Route 66 was one of the original highways in the U.S. Its cross-country route carried thousands of Americans migrating west in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and communities along the route flourished. The diverse landscapes, small-town charm, and Americana of Route 66 have made it a supporting role in some of pop culture’s biggest moments. Everyone from Forrest Gump to Ariana Grande have tapped the aesthetic of the arterial highway, documenting every step of the way.
