One year of gallery and museum closures left the art world missing NYC’s dynamic creative scene. Just in time for exciting re-openings, Tribeca Festival and Chanel have announced a celebratory art project in honor of the Art Awards 20th anniversary and the revitalization of the city.

Lower Manhattan will be bursting with a fresh outdoor gallery of art canvassed across streetscapes and empty storefronts throughout the next four weeks. Titled “Art is New York /New York is Art,” the project is centered upon rebirthing NYC through art.

Over 60 artists previously involved with Tribeca and Chanel’s Art Awards have created their own sketches showcasing New York’s complex relationship with art. Perhaps you may recognize the work of Julian Schnabel, Kiki Smith, Nate Lowman, Swoon, Chuck D, Matthew Modine, Christopher Walken, Donna Ferrato, Aurel Schmidt, Kalup Linzy, Don Gummer, Sophie Matisse, Dustin Yellin and many more. Most of these iconic artists have work in The Met and The MoMA, among other locations.

As the Tribeca Festival’s co-founder, Jane Rosenthal, shared, “There’s no better way to see New York come alive and heal than through the creative lens of these wonderful artists. This project beautifully represents the city.”
