Born on May 28, 1944 in Atlanta, Georgia during the thick of the southern-led soul movement, Gladys Knight began singing at the age of four, ultimately forming a family-run band alongside her siblings and cousins called The Pips. Her impressive harmonies and bellowing vocals earned Knight the frontwoman of the band, Gladys Knight and The Pips, and a whopping seven Grammy awards amongst her 22 nominations. Known as the “Empress of Soul,” CR celebrates Knight as the sweet-sounding singer, songwriter, and musical icon on her birthday today.
