Jay-Z is getting behind a project of critical importance. The rapper-turned-business mogul is making a film and television series about the murder of Trayvon Martin. In 2012, neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman shot Trayvon to death in a Florida cul-de-sac. Zimmerman pursued the unarmed 17-year-old because he thought that the teen looked suspicious, chasing him down and shooting him during an altercation. Zimmerman was later acquitted of killing Trayvon in a trial that opened centuries-old racial wounds. The murder was a catalyst for the Black Lives Matter movement, which objects to the disproportionate number of black people killed by police in America every year.
To kickstart the project, Jay-Z has bought the rights to two books about the teen: Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice by news reporter Lisa Bloom and Why We Continue to Repeat It and Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin by Martin’s parents. The books focus on the trial and the impact of Trayvon’s death on his family respectively. Jay has partnered with the Weinstein Company for the project. The production house has confirmed that the duo are slated to make a six-part docu-series in addition to a full-length feature film around the subject, but have released no other details.
