Upon taking the stage at last night’s star-studded Chanel bash during Miami’s Art Basel, the evening’s special performer Rosalía took a moment between songs in her set to reflect back on her grandmother Lucrezia who would drench herself in Chanel N°5 fragrance. In N°5’s 100 powerful years, the storied juice conjures special memories for many all over the world as an olfactory experience that has been enjoyed and passed down from generation to generation like passing down a family heirloom.

For the house’s continued celebration of Chanel N°5 monumental centenary, Chanel carefully picks apart the rich encounter of smelling N°5 in a multi-sensory sculptural work by Set Designer Es Devlin titled Five Echos for Miami Art Basel 2021.

Erected in Miami’s Design District, the bright white labyrinth set in Jungle Plaza is eye catching amongst the area’s modern architecture. The sculptural form of the monument draws from the ancient Greek initiation dance connecting humans with one another and also with the earth. Five Echos examines Chanel N°5’s legacy looking at the interplay between synthetic and organic. The geometric shape of the installation sticks out amongst over 1,000 plants, trees, and shrubs which will be replanted in Miami-Dade county following the exhibition. The verdant forest-scape takes inspiration from the forests and gardens that surrounded Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel during her early teens while living at the Abbey of Aubazine. Five Echos‘ circular structure mimics the rounded windows of the Abbey of Aubazine painting an image of Chanel overlooking the forests from her window as a young girl.

Actors, artists, influencers, and more gathered at the house’s candlelit dinner to experience Five Echos installation firsthand where guests were able to walk through the space and take in all the sights, sounds, and smells. The evening rounded off with a lively surprise performance from Rosalía from inside the Five Echos monument.

FIVE ECHOES will be open to the public through December 21, 2021, with free admission
