Cher Performed at Tonight’s Camp-Themed Met Gala

In line with this year’s Met Gala’s theme of camp—more on what that means here—Cher was the surprise performer this evening. The Goddess of Pop joins past musicians like Kanye West, Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Madonna, and Lady Gaga (who co-hosted the evening along with Gucci’s Alessandro Michele, Harry Styles, Serena Williams, and Anna Wintour).

Cher couldn’t have been a more fitting option for the star-studded evening, now in its 71st year. Aside from the fact that the The Cher Show musical recently debuted on Broadway, and that the style and music icon will celebrate her 73rd birthday later this month, Cher is camp. Her memorable stage ensembles—most of which have been designed by costume design legend Bob Mackie—are everything the theme is: bedazzled, sequined, feathered, bold, and subversive. No wonder so many guests channeled her tonight; from Emily Ratajkowski to Ciara to Jennifer Lopez, Cher’s glamorous, boundary-breaking style was all the rage on the red carpet.

This isn’t the first time Cher has attended the Met Gala. Most recently, she was Marc Jacobs’ date in 2015, when the theme was “China: Through the Looking Glass.” And who can forget her appearance at the annual event in 1974, when she showed up arm-in-arm with Mackie in the original naked dress? (She’d attend again with Mackie in 1985, wearing an equally extraordinary confection.)

Though celebrities are technically forbidden to document all the action that goes on behind closed doors (that famous bathroom selfie notwithstanding), rest assured there’s plenty of Instagram stories to live vicariously through.
