Old Hollywood reign supreme at the 2021 Met Gala : “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” Barbie Ferreira and Emma Chamberlain, both gala newbies, pulled inspiration, in collaboration with their makeup artists and Byredo, from classic American fashion eras for their beauty looks.
The Euphoria actress worked with makeup artist Kalie Kennedy to create a 1920’s flapper moment. “She’s a native New Yorker, which means the theme really hit home with the Long Island Jazz age,” said Kennedy.
The look stayed true to the time, serving as a recreation without much of a modern twist. A skinny painted on brow replaced Ferreira’s natural one, framing the eyeshadow. Kennedy broke down the look saying, “she wanted a romantic soft cool tone color on the eye. Naturally, we used the Byredo Purple Stinger Colour Stick to carve out a soft crease, in a 20’s shape and packed “Electric Love” from the Byredo Sciomancer Palette on top.”
The makeup paired with tight ringlet curls, couture pearl headpieces custom made by Mudd Pearl, and the Jonathan Simkhai pearl beaded, curve hugging dress served the elegance and soft sexiness of the 1920’s jazz scene.
Chamberlain wore a bold eye, only subtle in its reference. Working with makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan, Chamberlain’s makeup look nodded towards 1960’s glam focusing on the eye’s with bold graphic shapes. “Emma is expressive, bold, confident, loud, and nothing encompasses that more than a bold eye with a pop of neon. It’s definitely not subtle and represents her generation and her place in pop culture,” said Deenihan.
Deenihan walked through how she accomplished the look with Byredo product by saying, “the focus of Emma’s makeup are her gorgeous eyes. I started by sweeping the Byredo Colour Stick in La Scène across the lid, and slightly above the crease. To add depth and drama, I added the Byredo Colour Stick in Dravite to the inner and outer lid. Next, I lined her lower lash line and waterline with black. In the center of the lid, I placed the Byredo Colour Stick in Kumato and then pressed Karma from the Byredo Eyeshadow 5 Colour Palette in Sciomancer and Manila from the BYREDO Corporate Colors Palette. For the pop of neon, I used Scylla from the Byredo Eyeshadow 5 Colour Palette in Syren.”
Chamberlain’s soft flipped out hair and circular earrings pulled together the 60’s theme, topping it off with her gold and silver, plunging, asymmetrical Louis Vuitton dress by Creative Director Nicholas Ghesquière.
