As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.
Jules Miller has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to inner health and wellness. Her personal experience with IBS led her to strategize, research, and find a results-based solution that developed into her supplement company The Nue Co. At the time she was diagnosed with the condition, Miller was already working in the food and wellness industry at London’s Detox Kitchen, and began trying to combat the symptoms with whatever supplements seemed promising. After not seeing any improvement, her grandfather, a chemist who dedicated his life to researching supplements, helped Miller formulate a plan to educate herself on the ingredients of the powders and pills she had been taking and figure out which were the most effective. Her own frustration isn’t uncommon. “About 78% of Americans are taking a supplement every day,” Miller tells CR, “but a majority of them don’t know if it’s working or not.”
To solve her own dilemma, she created a line of potent high-quality, organic supplements that benefit anyone looking to boost their inner and outer health–for Miller, it’s all interlinked. From daily boosters that target gut health to the new Skin Filter that addresses sun damage and pigmentation, The Nue Co. offers a range of chicly packaged supplements that can be delivered as a bespoke plan depending on your needs.
Here, Miller shares her tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle, her skincare routine, and where to start with supplements.
Do you have any advice for daily wellness?
“Three things make a massive difference: food, stress, and sleep. When it comes to food, I eat pretty well to be honest with you. I have a lot of protein, vegetables, fruit, juices, nuts, and I very rarely eat dairy and only eat gluten two to three times a week. I find that is the best way to manage my IBS symptoms. I also take our daily probiotic and daily Debloat+ twice a day. Food is a great place to start because it’s not going to just improve your energy levels, but improve your adrenals and skin health. Then its stress–it’s hard to avoid stress in the world we live in unfortunately, but I find that a couple of things make a difference. The first one is really simple but underrated: I turn off notifications for emails, messages, etcetera–all these things I used to have on my phone all the time. This means I’m in control of tuning in. The most important part of my wellness routine is the self awareness of narrowing your limitations and knowing your strengths. And the last thing is sleep. You really need to commit to sleep and recovery to feel well.”
For people who want to start incorporating supplements into their wellness regimen, where do you suggest they start?
“The most important thing when it comes to supplements is to go with the brand that uses truly clean ingredients. Do as much research as you possibly can. That is something that has been eye opening for me–entering the market I knew all of the stats and chemicals in supplements, but when you actually peel back what that means, the majority of the research done on these other ingredients usually found in supplements and pills is so limited that we just can’t be sure. When we’re consuming products that are supposed to help with your health, if there are ingredients in there with a question mark, you are just better off not using them. The fewer ingredients the better. Sometimes people think that means a cheaper product, but it really doesn’t. It means it’s a higher quality product.”
In your research for The Nue Co. have you come across anything that surprised you?
“In terms of product development, the most interesting thing I found was the power of connecting science and modern research with alternative medicine. Nootro-Focus is the perfect example because we blend clinically studied ingredients with practices like Chinese medicine. I think people always assume that new means better, but, actually, things thatdifferent cultures have been doing for centuries have merit. The other thing people don’t think about enough is that it’s not just about the ingredients, but how they were extracted. We use a very simple water and glycerin process, which means that we don’t have a preservative element. The shelf life is not as long, but the herbs are really powerful.”
What’s your daily skincare routine?
“I’m quite low maintenance when it comes to skincare. I wake up in the morning and always have a cold glass of water and our Skin Filter. Then I’ll use the Pai oil cleanser, which is a brand from the UK and amazing for sensitive skin. It’s got really clean ingredients. I then use our Topical – C powder, which has ascorbic acid and ferulic acid to help with the absorption of vitamin C in the skin. It’s got all of the powerful properties of vitamin C, but is also quite soothing on the skin. I blend about two or three shakes of the vitamin C powder into hyaluronic acid. With the hyaluronic acid I will use a simple, clean formula like from Image Skincare. When it comes to moisturizers I always use Pai Calming Day Cream or Tata Harper.”
What about makeup?
“I’ll use the Chantecaille Tinted Moisturizer, the RMS Living Luminizer, the Ilia mascara (which I claim is the best clean mascara on the market), and the Laura Mercier Candleglow Powder. I’ll just use a tiny amount of each of these products, just to make my skin feel really nice, glowy, and healthy.”
