Alexander McQueen’s Creative Director, Sarah Burton, looked to nature in its latest collection inspired by water and anemones. The designer opted to sit out fashion week this year, deciding to release a new collection on their own time. In addition to nature, Burton was also inspired by healing, something that has become imperative to us now, especially in this new pandemic world.
“It feels like now is a time for healing, for breathing new life, for exploring echoes from the past to enrich our future. More than ever, a sense of humanity, of the team working together with a single aim — to make something beautiful, something meaningful — feels both precious and important,” Said Burton in the collection notes.
Burton’s water and anemone-inspired collection consists of floral prints and patterns that contrast with lovely shades of pink, red, and black. Consisting of flowy dresses, denim, white t-shirts, and leather, Burton dramatized the collection using water lily embroidery, puffed sleeves, peplum waist designs, and silk.
Burton explains the theory behind her and her team’s inspiration stating, “We looked at water, for its healing properties, and at anemones. Anemones are the most ephemeral flowers, here made permanent in cloth. The women wearing the anemone dresses almost become like flowers, like their embodiment, their character – but amplified, grounded, radiant and strong.”
With the campaign photographed by Paolo Roversi, Burton and her team captured and manipulated photos of anemones, enlarged them, and transferred the images on the gowns. The prints on the gowns and items represent nature for what it is at its finest, beautiful and chaotic.
