In high fashion, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.
The simplest component of Lady Gaga’s four-outfit ensemble for this year’s camp-themed Met Gala might have just been her manicure: a minimalist set of oval-shaped red acrylics in OPI’s shade “Big Apple Red.” “She had four different outfits in hot pink, black, and black lingerie so we have to do nails that went with everything,” nail artist Naomi Yasuda tells CR. “That’s why we chose the classic red nail. Red nails go with everything.”
Yasuda, who started painting her own nails when she was 14 years old, was inspired growing up by watching her grandmother hone her craft as a kimono tailor. Yasuda then enrolled in Chunichi Beauty School near her hometown of Nagoya, Japan and began working at a nail salon, where she stayed for nearly five years. At the time, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to focus on in beauty so she also learned how to do makeup and hair, but nails ended up being her favorite. In 2008, she decamped for New York City and began handcrafting her own acrylics for clients (she never uses stencils) and working with A-listers Madonna, Gigi Hadid, and Mario Sorrenti.
Here, CR caught up with Yasuda about where she gets inspiration from, why she’s excited about men wearing more nail art, and her go-product products.
Do you have a skincare routine?
“My skincare routine is very simple. I just wash my face and then put some lotion. I’ve been using this Japanese face wash since high school called Fitit Perfect Whip by Shiseido Senka. I also like Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser. After that, I usually put on some toner. I try to switch up my skincare products so that my skin reacts to the products really well. Now I use Biotherm’s Toner, and then I put Embryonic. Once a week, I use this Luminous Melting Cleanser by Juice Beauty. It cleans all the pores and feels very nice. I also use this skin peeling product called Genius Ultimate Anti-Aging Bi-Phase Peel from Algenist when I feel my skin has gotten a little dirty. I leave it on for 10 minutes and then wash it off.”
Any favorite nail products?
“When I’m on set, I typically use nail polish. I love to use OPI base coat, because it’s very thin and dries very quickly. Also, for a top coat, I always use Seche Vite. When I do nails on set, I don’t really have time to dry nails so [it] really come in handy.”
Tell me about the nails you did for Ezra Miller for the Met Gala.
“Jason Rembert, who is his stylist, I’ve known for a long, long time and he’s been telling me that I need to work with Ezra. [They] wanted to do some sort of acrylic weird shape, and then Jason showed me the outfit he’s going to wear, so I suggested that we do white because it’s is very simple and clean, but it stands out very well. I was so happy to see that a lot of guys wore nail art this year for the Met.”
Are people experimenting more with nail art?
“I think so. People are becoming more open-minded.”
Where do you get inspiration from?
“Depends on the job. When I work with celebrities, they’re usually getting ready for a red carpet, photoshoot, or performance, so I usually talk to them or stylist or makeup artist to see what they’re doing. If they’re wearing a ‘20s look, I’d do half-moon red nails. When I’m working with my regular clients, some of them have ideas, so I usually ask what they want to do and just take it from there.”
How do you do your own nails?
“I usually keep it pretty simple. I work so much, so I can’t have long nails and I usually keep then short or medium length.”
Favorite nail look you’ve done?
“Last year, I worked with Kenzo. They made a film with Milla Jovovich and Humberto Leon, the creative director of Kenzo, directed it. The movie was about a family, and the mom has so many kids, and each child has a power. One of the kids has the superpower that can grow peoples’ nails any color or shape that she wants, so I made three crazy nail sets for the movie. One of them was super, super long nails and red. The second was nails connected to each other and the last one was a key-shaped nail. The girl made her nails into a key, so she can open any door.”
How would you describe your aesthetic?
“I think it’s very fun. One thing I don’t do is look for inspiration from other nail artists. I like fashion and art; my friends inspire me so I talk to them to see what they’re into. I need to be original. It’s okay to inspire each other and copy each other’s designs. Even my clients do it and bring out a picture of someone else’s design and I have to do it cause it’s my job, but I wouldn’t say that’s my work.”
