CR Exclusive: Amélie Pichard and Jean-Daniel Lorieux’s Fashionable Ode to Freedom

Amélie Pichard is quintessentially French. The shoe and bag designer creates objets d’art colored by bright colors, tongue and cheek humor, and an ounce of heart—her eponymous brand has utilized slow, sustainable means since its inception in 2010. Inspired by the the seductive universe of iconic photographer Jean-Daniel Lorieux, the designer reveals a new capsule collection and project today exclusively with CR.

Titled Écran Total (“An Ode to Freedom”), the series reinterprets striking images from Lorieux’s book of the same name and the spirit of Stéphanie de Monaco’s music video for “Ouragan” (for which Lorieux directed) onto ’80s-inspired fashion pieces.

The pair first met through Lorieux’s elder son, Nickolas, who had shared a fashion design class with Pichard during university. Several years later, they are linked in what the photographer describes as the same “happiness and energy.” A contemporary of Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin, Lorieux is known for his captivating portraits—the like of Nelson Mandela, Franck Sinatra, and David Lynch—as well as inspiring fashion editorial. For Pichard, the collaboration is a meaningful one. “His art means a lot,” she tells CR. “It’s the testimony of an other life where everything was sumptuous, generous, free, and light. I bought his ’80s book Coconut in 2014 and it became one of my favorites. My inspiration joined my reality.”

Spanning from crop tops to high bikinis and colorful mules, Écran Total‘s adjoining campaign imagery, which blends the designer’s woman with Lorieux’s fantasies, will be shown on exhibition in September during Paris Design Week.
