On a daily basis, the majority of people are bombarded by hundreds of images. In a general sense, we see adverts on trains or sky-high billboards, but on a more personal level, it’s likely that we take in the most via image sharing apps and other forms of social media. Images with a minimal aesthetic in particular have become the visual currency of platforms like Instagram, because they are easy to digest when quickly scrolling through one’s feed. This kind of aesthetic, while pleasant, can leave one feeling starved of eccentricity, personality, and inspiration—which is why we’re happy to introduce our new favorite Instagram account turned fully-fledged creative agency, Decorhardcore.
Founder Ksenia Shestakovsi began Decorhardcore as a niche space on the Internet, posting bizarre interiors dating from the late 20th century. Her choice of aesthetic ranges from a palatial bathroom emulating an Egyptian tomb to a humble toilet adorned with hot-pink lace doilies. As a ground rule, everything’s game as long as it’s eccentric. In the context of contemporary taste, the interiors she posts read as intangible and outlandish fantasy-scapes, but they’ve struck a cord on social media, eliciting a substantial response. So much was the reaction that she was able to open decorhardcore.com that publishes original editorial content, which has in turn caught the attention of Gucci’s Alessandro Michele.
Shestakovsi’s agency is an effort to make the aesthetic of her Instagram more palpable; it offers location scouting for shoots, designs interiors, and creates digital visual content for brands. Her very first client is confirmed to be Gucci—which makes sense if you take a quick glance at her feed. Under it’s new creative leadership, Michele’s adopted a maximalist approach and has appropriated bootleg graphics, elevating what might have been considered tacky by some into high fashion. Decorhardcore does something similar, highlighting the merit of what could otherwise be dismissed as tasteless or gaudy.
To kickstart the creative partnership, Decorhardcore created two images for Gucci’s fun meme release last week. Now Shestakovsi has confirmed in an interview online with media outlet i-D that they’re collaborating again on a secret project, slated for release later this month. Neither have announced what the new collab entails, but given some of her more recent Instagram posts we’ve got our fingers crossed for a line of Gucci monogram sofas—or better yet, perhaps a range Gucci Garden chinaware with a glitzy rhinestone trim.
