With worldwide lockdowns and strict social-distancing guidelines, Dior Men Creative Director Kim Jones wanted to offer an uplifting prediction for his Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Held virtually in Beijing to celebrate the brand’s significant Chinese following, the show artfully establishes a conversation between innovation and savoir-faire. Despite pandemic-induced logistical challenges, Jones turned to a familiar reference of burgeoning creativity amidst chaos: 1980’s New York.

Aptly titled “Hypercolored, Hyperreal,” Jones merges the sobering realities of our increasingly virtual world with feel-good pop-culture references such as science fiction and most notably, New York artist Kenny Scharf. A contemporary of greats Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, Scharf is known for his cartoon-like illustrations and prolific role in shaping New York’s bustling 1980’s art scene. For the Pre-Fall collection, Scharf unveiled a delightful series of prints and embroideries in bright hues that accentuate Jones’ knack for polished tailoring and show off his unmatched ability to foster authentic collaborations.

With a booming soundtrack by New York-based Honey Dijon, Jones merges exciting sectors of New York’s creative industry that grounds the collection in the past while also optimistically looking to the future. Combined with a captivating digital background, Dijon’s soundtrack that periodically exclaims “How do you say, Dior?” behind bouncing house music creates a much-needed dose of joyful energy.

Per Dior, Jones’ collection “celebrates exceptional Chinese craftsmanship in a captivating dialogue with house codes.” Quirky corsages, playful fringe, and lace gloves are compelling additions to Jones’ repertoire of delicate masculinity that he has come to explore at the house since his 2018 debut. Inspired by Scharf’s lively color palette, Jones delightfully bridges his interpretation of pop-culture with creative innovation through intelligent styling and must-have accessories – yes, there is a Kenny Scharf saddle bag.

Bridging ancestral techniques and futuristic audacity, Jones once again proves his unrivaled menswear eye while offering commentary on the fluctuating realities of our world. The collection’s fun-loving accessories and sleek silhouettes are on track to be a favorite amongst fashion enthusiasts, and with Jones taking over at Fendi, prospects look bright for the British designer.
