James Yates’ burgeoning modeling career started with a spontaneous one-way ticket to Australia, and his Burberry-clad joie de vivre has propelled him ever since. The UK-born model has called countless cities home in the last few years, from the beaches of Australia to the hipster capital of Los Angeles. Throughout high-profile campaigns and editorials alike, Yates’ portfolio blossomed, along with a passion for mental health advocacy and a desire to step to the other side of the camera. On a rare day off, the 27-year-old model sat down with CR to talk about photography, espresso martinis, and his little-known soft side.
What’s been your biggest career milestone so far?
“The Tom Ford campaign would have to be it, after that the work just started flowing. It was about 18 months ago, and since then, work has been great. It was also sick because [Ford] was on set helping shoot it, so watching him work was mad. I’ve shot with him three times since.”
What’s your dream modeling gig?
“It would have to be fragrance, in a nice location, like the Amalfi Coast or something like that. Really clear waters, very aesthetically pleasing. Doing fragrance for men, that’s your career. After that, you’re good. It would be nice to be in a position where I have that, so I can do things that are more personal. My family works in mental health, so it would be nice to be able to take the pressure off earning this way, and put some sort of resources into doing something like that.”
What’s been your favorite travel destination so far?
“There’s two places, for very different reasons. The Philippines, because the beaches there are just paradise. Completely on the flip side would be New Zealand, the landscapes–mountains and lakes–are insane. It’s so quiet. Peru would be close as well.”
What does an ideal day off look like for you?
“I’d have a brunch, with a couple of espresso martinis or mimosas. It would be sunny enough for a nice walk somewhere, probably with my girlfriend. I’d meet my mates later on, have a few drinks somewhere. Nothing crazy, just casual and social. A Sunday, basically.”
How would you describe your personal style? Where are your favorite places to shop?
“Pretty laid back, I normally only wear black. Recently, I’ve got a few really nice bits from Burberry. I bought a couple jackets a few weeks ago. Saint Laurent I have a few bits from, just the plain stuff. But for everyday, I quite like Zara. There’s a Parisian brand called Ron Dorff, all my everyday stuff comes from them. I also wear a lot of Acne.”
What’s something that you wish more people knew about you?
“If you’re close to me you’ll know this–I always put up a bit of a front, but I’m a massive softie. I try not to let too many people know that, but my close friends and family know. My girlfriend knows. I’m quite sensitive I suppose, which is weird in fashion. You do have to be quite thick-skinned.”
Photography is one of your hobbies. Do you think you’ll ever pursue it more seriously?
“I’ve just bought my first film camera. I’ve always been interested in it, but now I’m getting more of an eye. I shot with Mariano Vivanco for something, and he let me sit down with him at the end. We went through and picked the selects and went over some of the editing together. I’d love to do [photography] for a bit, but I’d keep it more of a personal thing.”
Where do you see yourself in five years?
“I’d like to still be working. I actually quite enjoy the industry, I think it gets a lot of negative attention. I like the travel. I like meeting new people every day, a lot of creative people, a lot of diverse people. I’d like to live just outside a city, somewhere a bit more quiet. I’d like to be doing something cool, maybe set up something on my own that provides value to other people. And supporting my girlfriend, she’s a tennis player so she travels just as much. It’d be quite nice to be able to travel together.”
