It is no surprise that creation begins at home.
Throughout 2020 as the fashion industry braced for impact in a pandemic with an impending economic recession and calls for an equitable work force, young designers often took the liberty to explore our world’s chaos in lockdown.
In a world more apart than ever, the 20 semi-finalists for the coveted LVMH young designer’s prize hail from an interconnected world challenging the fashion industry’s norms. Many of the semi-finalists describe their collections as genderless and fluid, a tangible representation of the groundbreaking work taking place in small ateliers from Nigeria and Japan to China and Lebanon. A majority represent a post-pandemic future, filled with intricate and thoughtful designs profiling style expression, materialism, and sustainability.
For the first time in the prizes’ history, the public is allowed to vote for their favorites in a virtual showroom premiering April 6. Alongside industry figures and cultural icons like Bella Hadid, Naomi Osaka, and our very own Carine, fashion’s lovers are partaking in the fun.
“All the semi-finalists show a sincere and deep commitment, whether it be social, ethical, artisanal, environmental, or local. They are anchored in today’s world,” said Delphine Arnault, executive vice president at Louis Vuitton. Arnault founded the prize in 2014 to nurtue fashion’s brightest
Last year, the coveted winner’s spot was shared among all finalists. For the 2021 winner, the 300,000 euro prize comes along with a year of mentorship from LVMH executives, no doubt one of the highest honors one can receive in the industry. “The winners are young, often working alone or in pairs, sometimes surrounded by very small teams, and they aren’t always aware of how this industry works, in terms of intellectual property or marketing, sourcing or distribution, supply chain,” said Arnault on the mentorship program. “All the winners confirm how much this helps them in their strategy and their development.”
Win or lose, we can’t wait to see what these emerging designers have in store for the future. Meet all 20 semi-finalists for the 2021 LVMH Young Fashion Designers Prize below.
