Traditional and historic craftsmanship seems to travel farther away from us, especially as digital platforms continue to push technology to the forefront of artistry. Yet is the trade really obsolete? Carine and entrepreneur and cultural benefactor Adrian Cheng are ready to tackle that question with the second installment of their trailblazing webinar K11 Original Masters, a series made to explore the quintessential skills and influence of modern-day craftsmanship.

An IGTV exclusively aired on CR’s official Instagram (@crfashionbook) provides a glimpse of what to expect. The episode features Gaia Pace, director of haute couture studios and research at Christian Dior, offering an in-depth walk through the decade old techniques practiced by the French Couture House, including the making of and the history behind the iconic Lady Dior Bag. The exclusive lesson will also present a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the special edition Cruise Collection 2021 Lady Dior bag (a process previously only reserved for internal members of the house), navigate the house’s evolution within today’s fashion landscape, and is set to explore other mediums, like the techniques employed in traditional Chinese art and reworked by China’s newest creatives.

“Following the incredible response to the launch of K11 Original Masters last fall, I’m delighted to reunite with Carine alongside Dior’s Gaia Pace, two of the most creative visionaries in fashion today,” noted Cheng in a press release. “Carine and I share the same vision of preserving our world’s fast-disappearing savoir-faire, and in bringing together the industry’s greatest minds to speak to the timeless intricacies of their designs, aspire to celebrate the true heart of fashion while showcasing its historical significance as an art form. We hope that these intimate conversations inspire society’s sincerest appreciation for these artisanal techniques, too.”

As the founder of K11 and K11 Craft and Guild Foundation, a Hong Kong based charity that preserves age-old craftsmanship and aims to cultivate a relationship between the arts, the economy, and community, Cheng hopes that a younger generation can immerse themselves in craftsmanship through the webinar, an initiative that will also be exhibited in the episode.

“As our world moves at a very fast pace, there is a great magic to be found in the meticulous contemporary and age-old techniques treasured in couture but also prêt-a-porter,” also said Carine, stylist, industry trailblazer, and founder of CR. “We are able to learn so much about fashion’s history through craftsmanship. As Original Masters celebrates a new wave of creative techniques, we hope to shine a light on the ancient savoir-faires that remain at the core and soul of fashion today.”

It’s clear that Carine and Cheng share the same goals. K11 Original Masters was launched in October 2020 and was a by-product of Carine and Cheng’s appreciation and dedication to conserving fashion’s timeless, ritualistic techniques and introducing craftsmanship to the mainstream in a unique way. While this is the first partnership between the two, both are working on an upcoming collaborative project that is to be announced in the upcoming weeks.

K11 Original Masters will premiere on March 18th at 12PM Central European Time, 6PM Hong Kong Time, and 5AM Eastern Standard Time.
