Three acts of Hermès wasn’t enough. Frankly, 300 acts might not be enough.
Hermès took us around the world in fashion, giving us a live presentation in three parts via a triptych spanning from the Park Avenue Armory in New York to La Garde Républicaine in Paris to finally, Maison Hermès in Shanghai. The theme throughout was movement. The first act in New York was met with dancing: “Let the movement begin,” the brand writes on Instagram. In monochrome brown looks, dancers showed us a preview of what was to come next. The second act in Paris showed the full Fall/Winter 2021 collection. Clean lines, monochrome looks, and a subtle, earthy color palette defined these looks. The third and final act in Shanghai combined art and movement, with dancers moving around orange boxes, creating art along the way.
Creative Director Nadège Vanhée-Cybulski proved that simplicity isn’t dead with this collection: over-the-top looks and loud patterns aren’t everything. Sometimes a tailored jacket and a long, belted dress is exactly what we want. And that’s precisely what she gave us. Simplicity doesn’t mean anything close to boring for Hermès, though: what you don’t get in bright colors and labels, you get in extremely careful craftsmanship, sophistication, and elegance. While the third act brought us performance art, the clothes themselves were art as well. And while we didn’t see many bright colors, that doesn’t mean we didn’t see bold colors. The deep reds and the pops of green didn’t go unnoticed and are a perfect staple for fall. Set against the iconic Hermès orange background, the calmness of the collection was grounding—a nice repose from the hecticness of life, and exactly what we needed right now.
A show in three parts—in three parts of the world we’d like to be in right now. Even though we can’t physically go anywhere right now, Hermès took us there through art, movement, and the combination of the two. And we loved every second. We’re ready to pack our suitcases full of pieces from this collection and follow Vanhée-Cybulski anywhere.
