The Giambattista Valli Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture presentation began with an echoing soundtrack and a blank wall. But just a second later, a clip of blue skied and architecturally beautiful Seville, Spain faded in, alongside a model slow-motion twirling in a magnificent soft red, tiered cape with bow closures and a floral-bow head piece. It was just a glimpse of how the rest of the show would play out.

The collection was not only grandiose, but highlighted Valli’s signature voluminous structure. The overall tone was romantic, classical, and even hinted at ’60s and ’70s influence – this included balloon and bell sleeves, gold polka dots, sleek floor length cape dresses and shift dresses, and plenty of feathers. Dimension also dominated, with looks involving layered taffeta ruffles, textured beading, and tulle either cascading down asymmetrical hemlines, embodying the whole gown, or decorated on the heels, so that with each graceful move the details peaked through.

Meanwhile bows and flowers were carefully weaved into high Victorian-esque up dos and accented pieces that featured those same articles such as corest-like vests embroidered with flowers and bow blouses. There were face and head pieces including masquerade masks covered in rustic leaves or delicate opaque veils, both adding mysterious notes. Some of the looks even had all three accessories strategically placed to create a masterpiece. With these continuous elements, the color palette distinguished the looks throughout the collection, ranging from a classic set of rich red, black, gold, and cream to a more vibrant scheme of coral, rosy and blush pink, and saffron yellow.

Ironically speaking the standout piece was worn by the dancer, who occasionally pranced around the models. In white tights and a cream, loose fitted blouse adorned with feathers, it emanated a theatrical feel yet was elegant in its simplicity.
