In February 2020 B.C. (Before Covid) power blazers, exaggerated bow blouses, midi skirts coupled with knee length boots, and … (latex?) dominated the Saint Laurent runway. But nearly a year later it all seems like a sartorial spectacle. As the world exchanged tailored two-piece suits and structured silhouettes for laissez-faire fashion, so did Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello
The Saint Laurent SS21 capsule, titled “I Wish You Were Here”, featured the house’s emblems but from a looser, more breathable perspective. Fitted jackets replaced fur-lined halter tops; trousers were discarded for comfortable biker shorts; some looks didn’t even have pants at all in exchange for silky intimates. It was all staged against the desert, which honored the slow-paced life in Algeria of the maison’s namesake and quite possibly a reflection of the sign of the times.
But now, we’re seeing it all in a different lens with Saint Laurent’s new short film Summer of ’21. In collaboration with filmmaker Gaspar Noe, it stars actress turned fashion icon Caroline Rampling and showcases the collection in an eerily romantic hue influenced by the giallo genre (an Italian term for thriller novels).
It naturally begins with a model running out of the woods wearing a biker short-blazer set adorned with a flower accessory. Throughout the film, scenes alternate between Rampling musing in a floral, fur-trimmed robe to models lounging around an opulent velveteen and gold theater clad in the SS21 pieces until it ends with Rampling on stage illuminated by a glaring red light. Its ominous yet mesmerizing and its nature couldn’t be more of an antithesis to the soft-hued backdrop of the collection’s debut.
