As individuals, communities, businesses, and the global collective figure out how they can contribute to combatting the coronavirus pandemic, the fashion world has rallied in the face of adversity. From philanthropic donations to providing medical resources, designers and brands have been doing their part. The latest efforts have been centered around the shortage of supplies many hospitals around the globe are now facing after the hysteria around the spread of the virus caused surgical masks and disposable gloves to sell out. These crucial resources protect medical workers who are on the frontlines of this pandemic, however, as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have repeatedly noted, the general public does not need to wear masks. French label Coperni is offering a solution to those who are still inclined to wear them, providing a free sewing pattern so people can make their own face masks at home.
Along with the printable instructions (in French) and pattern on its website, the brand also shared a tutorial video to its Instagram. The only supplies needed are a few pieces of fabric, scissors, thread, and a needle or sewing machine. Coperni’s co-founders Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant also shared an images of themselves in homemade face masks, with the latter asking others to “leave masks for hospitals and #makeyourownmask.”
Elsewhere, British designer Phoebe English has contacted the UK government to volunteer her textiles and resources to make single-use masks for hospitals. This also comes at a time when New York’s Governor Cuomo has called on apparel manufacturers to look into making masks. Designer Christian Siriano reached out to the governor via Twitter, offering his team’s skills and materials to make masks for local hospitals as they work remotely. They hope to produce 1,000 masks in just a few days.
