Just in time to retire your winter boots and slide into some spring footwear, German shoe company Birkenstock and New York-based brand Proenza Schouler are joining forces for a redesign of Birkenstock’s iconic Arizona and Milano styles. The shoes feature velcro straps instead of the traditional hardware buckles, while contrasting topstitching finishes off the classic sandals with a utilitarian, sporty detail. Birkenstock is no stranger to adapting its ultra-comfortable, decidedly ugly, yet wildly popular footwear for high fashion taste–previous designer collabs include Rick Owens and Valentino.
The Birkenstock X Proenza Schouler sandals are available in white, black, tan, silver, and ochre, inspired by the palette of designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez’s past and present Proenza Schouler collections. The polished calf leather comprise the uppers of the minimalist styles, giving off a clean and industrial feeling, accompanied by the comfort of Birkenstock’s signature cork sole.
“Birkenstock thrives on innovation and challenges that talents like Proenza Schouler bring to our products. Achieving the balance between respecting our core principles and values, whilst delivering new design propositions is what we look for in our partnerships,” the CEO of Birkenstock, Oliver Reichert, said .
The brands recruited photographer Juergen Teller and art director Peter Miles as creative collaborators for the capsule’s launch. A three-dimensional visual concept will be designed to embody the artistic points of view of the designers’ process along with Birkenstock’s heritage of craftsmanship and manufacturing. Teller also lensed the chic campaign images that show the sandals paired with Proenza Schouler’s modern designs.
“We are excited to be partnering with Birkenstock as we have been longtime admirers and devotees of the brand,” said McCollough and Hernandez. “We are also thrilled to be working on this exciting venture alongside Juergen and Peter. Birkenstock and Proenza Schouler both share a common respect and admiration for the craftsmanship and detailed work that goes into all of our products, and we are excited to celebrate these all-important qualities in our collaboration.”
The Birkenstock X Proenza Schouler collection is available online now exclusively via Net-a-Porter and in select retailers from March 20th, 2020.
