Things are going to look a little different next season in Milan. Raf Simon has been tapped as co-creative director of Prada, working alongside founder Miuccia Prada and sharing with her “equal responsibilities for creative input and decision making,” the house said this morning. Their first joint collection will be shown in September for the Spring/Summer 2021 season.

The Italian brand said the partnership with Simons, who’s designed menswear for his own eponymous label since 1995 and most recently enjoyed a brief, two-year stint at Calvin Klein, “is born from a deep reciprocal respect” and will be “a new approach to the very definition of creative direction for a fashion brand.”

Simons, who shares a similar fondness for art with Prada, had been rumored to join the house for months. The 52-year-old Belgian designer is both a friend of the label and a supporter, having attended numerous shows over the years. He also worked with Prada Group in 2005, when the company tapped him to design for Jil Sander. (He led the label for seven years.) Whether Simons’ appointment is a foreshadowing of Prada’s eventual retirement remains to be seen. Watch this space.
