Daniel Lee Was Surprised By the Success of the Bottega Veneta Pouch

Bottega Veneta’s woven pouch bag, one of Creative Director Daniel Lee’s first designs for the Italian house, is now a highly coveted accessory. Originally from the Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the bag became a sensation amongst fashion lovers, and quickly became Bottega’s bestselling bag. However, according to the designer in a recent interview, when he initially proposed the Pouch, the brand’s merchandising team was cynical. They were unsure if it would do well considering there was no strap, no logo, and it was not the most functional bag for someone to carry around. “It was something that was done so spontaneously to get through that first season,” Lee said. “It was never something I thought would be so resonant.”

Despite all this, the bag has seen unbridled success and is now offered in various colors and materials.

The intreccio weave of the original Pouch has also been applied to other accessories, from handbags to shoes. When Lee was asked about his vision for the brand, he mentioned that he wanted to focus equally on ready-to-wear and accessories. With each season, a new Bottega shoe or bag captivates the runway–and the social media-savvy sartorial world beyond–and the same will likely be done at the brand’s upcoming Fall/Winter 2020 runway show.
