From an overwhelming 1,700 applications from 110 different countries, LVMH has officially narrowed down the top 20 semi-finalists for this year’s LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers. The winner will receive a whopping 300,000 Euros and a one-year mentorship program by the LVMH team, ranging from production and distribution to marketing and sustainable development.
This year’s shortlisted designers hail from various countries and nationalities, including New York’s very own Peter Do, Japanese designer Tomotoka Koizumi, South Africa’s Sindiso Khumalo, and for the first time Argentina will be represented by Buenos Aires-based Romina Cardillo and his brand Nous Etudions.
As the industry becomes increasingly more aware of fashion’s intersection with social justice issues, LVMH continues to further this dialogue by supporting designers that address matters from gender neutral clothing to sustainability. This year’s candidates will not only be making beautiful clothes, they’re tackling fashion’s carbon footprint, designing for their communities, and celebrating their diverse cultures. The designers also represent the collaborative spirit behind a fashion house, as more and more brands are lead by a team rather than a sole creative director.
“This year, it is worthy of note that more and more designers are working in collectives, with six duos and one trio represented among the semi-finalist,” Delphine Arnault, Director and Executive Vice President of LVMH, says. “This fusion of savoir-faire and modernity, not to mention the originality of our semi-finalists’ collections, heralds a wonderful 2020 edition.”
The prize will be judged by the committee of experts: a star-studded collection of some of fashion’s biggest names, from Gigi Hadid to CR’s Carine. Other experts include writer Sinéad Burke, Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo, makeup artist Pat McGrath, and more.
All the designers will present their collection in Paris on February 27 and 28 to the panel of judges, where only eight fashion brands will continue to the finals, which will be held on June 5 at the Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris.
