In the midst of Black History Month, H&M and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth Carter are dropping a capsule collection drawn from Carter’s multifaceted life and inspirations. Complete with streetwear-inspired silhouettes, pride-soaked colorways, and uplifting affirmations, the 11-style capsule radiates the exuberance and individuality of Carter’s groundbreaking career.

The upcoming capsule translates the cultural nods for which Carter became a Hollywood heavyweight. She is responsible for the costumes of groundbreaking films including Selma, Do the Right Thing, and Black Panther—for which she won an Oscar in 2019. Across all genres and budgets, Carter’s sartorial touch is famously intertwined with Afro-Future and African American aesthetics.

The Ruth Carter X H&M collection is peppered with hints of ’90s streetwear, from oversized crewnecks to bucket hats, all coated in the red, black, and green hues of the Liberation flag. Affirmations like “Trust Your Voice” and the designer’s on-set nickname “Ruthless” front many of the vibrant pieces. According to Carter, her collaboration with H&M “serves to empower anyone with an inner creative who is passionate about nurturing their voice and determined to share their story—their art.”

In tandem with the capsule’s release, H&M and Carter produced a podcast titled “And That’s the Truth, Ruth!” set on detailing Carter’s career and to perpetuate a dialogue about the African American experience. In honor of the collection, H&M funded a scholarship with Carter’s alma mater Hampton University.

The H&M x Ruth Carter collection will be available online and in select stores on February 13.
